Lesson 1: Functional Groups
Lesson hook:
As an introduction to organic chemistry it is important for the students to conceptualize where they have seen or heard the term organic. Firstly discuss the term organic and some ways in which they have heard it being used. Have the students identify objects from everyday life that are made of organic materials. Ask them to identify objects made of artificial organic compounds.

Action:
For the main part of the lesson, discuss and explain the following in either a PowerPoint presentation, smartboard presentation:
- Functional groups
- Introduce different functional groups
- Carbon carbon multiple bonds
- Single-bonds between carbon and more electronegative atoms
- Double bonded carbon and oxygen
- Handout of the functional group priorities in organic nomenclature
- Learn about the different type of isomers found in organic compounds
Consolidation: Red light green light
- Something they are confident with and something they are unsure of
