Terminology
Curriculum Expectations: F2.1 use appropriate terminology related to electrochemistry, including, but not limited to: half-reaction, electrochemical cell, reducing agent, oxidizing agent, redox reaction, and oxidation number [C]
LEARNING GOAL
Students should realize that terminology is very important to understand especially when it comes to the terms oxidation and reduction. Tell students that they must keep track of all the new terms that will show up in class in the upcoming weeks for this unit and instruct them to record each definition and learn to use them in sentences.
CONTENT
Student Task
Students should copy these into their notes and define them by including an example for each one. Teachers are advised not to give them the defintions but instead ask them to research the definitions and add them to their notes in their own words (to enhance comprehension).
CONSOLIDATION
Ask students to test one another and ask them to use the terms as required by the curriculum documents.

- Electrochemistry, Oxidation-reduction reaction, Oxidation, Reduction, Oxidizing agent, Reducing agent, Anode, Cathode, Electrolyte, Electrode, Electrolytic cell, and Half-reactions
- Ask students to use www.xpresslab.com This is an excellent resource because students can voice their content via online videos and it allows teachers to access the website as well. Please note each video must only be 3 minutes long.
