Properties of Acids and Bases (I)
Lesson Hook:
A short lab will be used as a hook for this unit. Information about the lab can be found at the bottom of this page.
Lesson:
Strong acids and bases and weak acids and bases are to be discussed in terms of equilibrium. Relating Keq to the strength of an acid or a base is great connection from the previous chapter. A Bronsted-Lowry definition of acids and bases must be incorporated to teach the concept of conjugate acids and bases. Relatively simple problems involving strong acids and bases will be discussed and taught in the lesson.
Consolidation:
Students will be required to give an exit slip before leaving the classroom. It should contain 1 thing that they did NOT understand, and 1 new thing that they learnt today. Questions should be carefully examined to answer for the next lesson.

Properties of Acids and Bases Lab
Relatively safe acids and bases (diluted) are to be used to explore the properties of acids and bases. Reactions with phenopthalein, litmus paper, and metals should be shown in this lab. Chemical wells, droppers, the indicators, and metal (such as magnesium strips) should be provided for this lab.
Watch over the students and answer any questions they may have during the lab. Keep in mind that this lab shouldn't take too long, since it is used for a hook.
If you would like this lab to be a full lab, more materials should be collected for the lab.
